Cuttack : India clinched a 4-wicket victory over England in the second One Day International (ODI) match at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack, to secure an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series with one match left. This victory marks India’s seventh successive bilateral ODI series win at home against England, a testament to their dominant performance on home soil.
Chasing a target of 305 runs, the Indian team comfortably reached 308 for six wickets in 44.3 overs, with captain Rohit Sharma leading the way with a magnificent knock of 119 runs from 97 balls. Shubman Gill also contributed significantly, making 60 runs off 52 balls, setting the stage for the chase. Shreyas Iyer played a crucial innings of 44 runs and was supported by Axar Patel, who remained unbeaten on 41 runs to guide India to victory.
Rohit Sharma was awarded the Player of the Match for his excellent performance, which included 12 fours and 3 sixes. His composed and aggressive innings ensured India reached the target with more than five overs to spare.
For England, Jamie Overton was the most successful bowler, taking two wickets, while Gus Atkinson, Adil Rashid, and Liam Livingstone each claimed one wicket. Despite their best efforts, England’s bowlers could not stop India’s confident chase.
Earlier in the day, England had chosen to bat first and posted a total of 304 runs, being all out in 49.5 overs. Joe Root top-scored for England with 69 runs, while Ben Duckett supported him with a solid 65 runs. Despite their efforts, England struggled to accelerate in the latter stages of the innings.
India’s bowlers kept things tight throughout the innings, with Ravindra Jadeja leading the charge, picking up three wickets for 51 runs. Mohammed Shami, Harshit Rana, Hardik Pandya, and Varun Chakravarthy all chipped in with a wicket each, helping to restrict England’s total.
India had previously won the first ODI in Nagpur by 4 wickets. With the series already secured, the third and final ODI will be played in Ahmedabad on February 12, where India will look to complete a series sweep.
