Survey Sanctioned for New Saharanpur–Dehradun Rail Line via Shakumbhari Devi

In a significant development for regional connectivity and infrastructure expansion, the Government of India has sanctioned the survey for a new railway line from Saharanpur to Dehradun via Shakumbhari Devi, spanning approximately 81 kilometers. The announcement was made on 25th July 2025 through a written reply by Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Rajya Sabha.

The survey work has already commenced, and it is being carried out for the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR). The railway line is expected to provide a vital link between Saharanpur and Dehradun, enhancing travel options and supporting the economic development of the region, particularly benefiting the devotees and tourists visiting the revered Shakumbhari Devi temple.

Railway officials emphasize that sanctioning railway projects is a continuous and dynamic process, influenced by multiple factors. These include traffic forecasts, last-mile connectivity, strategic regional requirements, and socio-economic considerations. Additionally, existing commitments, availability of funds, and competing demands across the country play a critical role in project prioritization.

Once the DPR is finalized, the project will undergo further scrutiny and consultations with key stakeholders such as State Governments. It will also require necessary approvals from entities like NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Finance before receiving the final nod for implementation.

The proposed line is expected to ease passenger and freight movement in the region and contribute to the overall development of Uttarakhand and western Uttar Pradesh. Moreover, it aligns with Indian Railways’ goal to improve connectivity to pilgrimage destinations, boost tourism, and support regional economic growth.

Given the procedural nature of such large infrastructure projects, no fixed timeline has been provided for its completion. However, the sanctioning of the survey marks an important first step toward realizing the project.

This new rail link, once executed, will be a milestone in bridging geographical and cultural distances while offering an efficient mode of transportation for locals, pilgrims, and tourists alike.
