Supreme Court to Review Case of Burnt Currency at Judge Yashwant Varma’s Bungalow

The Supreme Court will hear a plea today seeking immediate action by the Delhi Police and a thorough investigation into the discovery of a large amount of burnt cash at the bungalow of Delhi High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Varma. According to the causelist published on the Supreme Court’s website, a bench of Justices Abhay S. Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan is scheduled to hear the matter.

The controversy erupted after a fire incident at Justice Varma’s official residence led to the shocking revelation of unaccounted-for cash, which had been partially burnt. The matter has raised serious concerns about judicial integrity and potential financial misconduct. In response to the unfolding controversy, the Supreme Court Collegium decided to repatriate Justice Varma to the Allahabad High Court, which is his parent court. However, the judge has strongly refuted any allegations of wrongdoing and has claimed that he is being unfairly targeted by media speculation.

The plea before the Supreme Court has urged for an expedited investigation by the Delhi Police and, if necessary, the involvement of central agencies to ensure an impartial probe. Legal experts believe that if substantial evidence emerges, it could have wide-ranging implications, not only for Justice Varma but also for broader judicial accountability in India.

As the case unfolds, questions are being raised about how such a significant sum of unaccounted cash was present at a sitting judge’s residence. The origins of the money, potential involvement of third parties, and whether the fire was accidental or an attempt to destroy evidence are key aspects that need thorough examination.

Justice Varma, who has been serving in the Delhi High Court, has publicly dismissed the allegations, stating that they are an attempt to malign his reputation. In his defense, he has maintained that the accusations lack credibility and are being exaggerated by sections of the media. His transfer back to the Allahabad High Court is being seen by some as a disciplinary move, while others view it as an attempt to defuse tensions surrounding the controversy.

Meanwhile, the legal fraternity is closely watching the developments, as this case has the potential to set a precedent regarding the handling of allegations against sitting judges. With the Supreme Court now involved, the coming days are expected to bring more clarity on the course of action that will be taken against Justice Varma, if any evidence of misconduct is found.
