Lok Sabha Suspended Till 2 PM Following Opposition Protest

New Delhi : The Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 PM today due to a ruckus created by opposition members over the Joint Committee Report on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024. The report, which was scheduled to be tabled in the House, became the focal point of heated protests from opposition parties, including Congress, DMK, and Samajwadi Party.

As the House convened this morning, Speaker Om Birla repeatedly urged opposition members to allow the House to proceed with the listed business. He emphasized that the members would be given the opportunity to speak once the report was officially presented. Speaker Birla also stressed that the Question Hour was crucial for the functioning of the House and that creating disorder was inappropriate. Despite his appeals, the uproar continued, prompting the Speaker to adjourn the House till 2 PM.

The opposition’s protests are primarily centered around the Joint Committee Report on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which aims to bring changes to the management and regulation of Waqf properties. The bill has sparked debate due to its potential impact on religious institutions and their governance. Opposition members have raised concerns about the provisions of the bill, demanding more time for deliberation and a deeper examination of its implications.

Simultaneously, the Joint Committee Report on the Waqf Amendment Bill was tabled in the Rajya Sabha, also amid opposition protests. BJP MP Dr. Medha Vishram Kulkarni presented the report in the Upper House, where opposition members continued their sloganeering against the bill. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar intervened, urging members to allow the House to function smoothly, but his requests went unheeded. Eventually, the House was adjourned for a short break until 11:20 AM.

The disruptions in both Houses highlight the ongoing tension between the ruling government and opposition parties over legislative matters. The Waqf Amendment Bill remains a contentious issue, with both sides continuing to clash over its provisions and potential consequences.
