Kiren Rijiju Clarifies No Deadline Extension for Waqf Property Uploads on UMEED Portal

Minister says the six-month statutory period has already lapsed and cannot be extended under the Waqf Amendment Act or Supreme Court directions.

New Delhi, December 5, 2025: The Ministry of Minority Affairs on Friday issued a clarification stating that Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has never announced any extension for uploading Waqf property details on the UMEED Portal, countering reports circulating in some quarters.

According to the ministry, the Minister’s comments were inaccurately interpreted. The statement explains that Rijiju clearly mentioned that the six-month period prescribed under the Waqf Amendment Act has already concluded and cannot be prolonged, as the law as well as the Supreme Court’s directions prohibit any such extension.

To ease concerns from mutawallis who are struggling to complete the process, the Minister conveyed that the government would adopt a lenient, non-penal approach for the next three months. This temporary relief, the ministry stressed, is intended only as a humanitarian and facilitative step, not an official extension of the mandated deadline.

The Ministry further clarified that individuals unable to finish their registration before 11:59:59 pm on December 6, 2025, have the option to seek additional time from the Waqf Tribunal, the only authority empowered to grant such extensions.  Rijiju has repeatedly underscored that any alteration to the statutory deadline is legally impermissible and remains firmly bound by the provisions passed by Parliament and upheld by the Supreme Court.
