Pune–Mumbai Route Gets First Private Electric Bus Service

Maharashtra pushes green mobility with plans to expand EV bus network

Pune: In a major boost to eco-friendly transport, Maharashtra has rolled out its first privately operated electric bus service connecting Pune and Mumbai.

The service was inaugurated by Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal, marking a step forward in the state’s transition towards sustainable public transport.

The initiative, launched by Prasanna Purple, begins with a fleet of 10 electric buses built by Switch Mobility. The service aims to offer a cleaner and more efficient travel option between the two major cities.

Officials highlighted that the launch is part of a broader strategy to modernise urban transport systems across Pune and nearby regions, including Pimpri-Chinchwad. Plans are underway to strengthen infrastructure such as transport hubs, truck terminals, and EV charging networks.

The state government is also working on a large-scale proposal to introduce around 3,000 electric buses in the coming years, significantly expanding green mobility options.

Speaking at the event, authorities emphasised the importance of adopting electric mobility to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and cut emissions. They also pointed out the potential for optimising electricity usage, especially through off-peak charging.

Industry leaders involved in the project called for stronger policy support, improved infrastructure, and better last-mile connectivity to make electric public transport more viable and accessible.

They also stressed that collaborative efforts between government and private players will be key to addressing India’s growing transportation needs.
