New Delhi— In a surprising development, Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from his post with immediate effect, citing health reasons and the need to prioritize medical care. The resignation, submitted under Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution, was formally addressed to President Droupadi Murmu.
In his resignation letter, Dhankhar stated, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately.” The announcement has stirred political circles, with reactions pouring in from across party lines.
Vice President Dhankhar conveyed deep gratitude to President Murmu, describing their professional relationship as “soothing and wonderful.” He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, acknowledging his “invaluable support” throughout his tenure.
“The warmth, trust, and affection I have received from all the Hon’ble Members of Parliament would ever be cherished and embedded in my memory,” Dhankhar added, expressing appreciation for Parliament and the democratic process.
Looking back on his term, Dhankhar expressed pride in the nation’s advancements. “It has been a privilege to witness the country’s remarkable economic progress and exponential development. Bharat’s global rise has been phenomenal,” he wrote.
Appointed in August 2022, Dhankhar served as the 14th Vice President of India. During his tenure, he also served as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, where he earned praise for his fair conduct and firm stance on parliamentary discipline.
His sudden resignation has now triggered speculation over the next possible candidate for Vice President, as India prepares for a politically significant year ahead.
