LG Taranjit Singh Sandhu and CM Rekha Gupta Confer 26,649 Degrees at IP University’s 18th Convocation

Graduates Urged to Look Beyond Textbooks and Drive India’s Growth in AI and Innovation Era

New Delhi, April 9 2026: Delhi Lieutenant Governor Sardar Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta presided over the 18th convocation of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, awarding degrees to 26,649 students. Addressing the graduates, LG Sandhu emphasized that convocation marks not merely the end of an academic journey but the beginning of responsibilities that contribute to nation-building. He urged students to go beyond textbook knowledge, adapt to the evolving world shaped by artificial intelligence and innovation, and embrace critical thinking as a key to societal impact.

CM Rekha Gupta highlighted the dedication and perseverance of students over the years, calling them the real drivers of a developed India. She encouraged them to leverage their education not only for personal growth but also for societal advancement, aligning their efforts with the vision of Viksit Bharat.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr) Mahesh Verma and Prof. Yogesh Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi, along with students, faculty members, parents, and other dignitaries, attended the ceremony.

LG Sandhu further stated that modern education must cultivate adaptability, logical reasoning, and courage to innovate. Invoking the teachings of Guru Gobind Singh, he described knowledge as a tool for justice and service, emphasizing that students have a role in shaping Delhi’s and India’s future through meaningful contributions in areas like urban development, public health, and digital governance.

The Chief Minister praised the university’s initiatives in AI, robotics, data science, and design innovation. She lauded the Atal Incubation Centre, which has supported over 170 startups, helping young people transition from job seekers to job creators.

Outlining government priorities, CM Gupta noted Delhi’s education budget has increased to ₹19,326 crore this year. She emphasized the focus on enhancing higher education facilities while providing free coaching to over 2,200 students for competitive exams including JEE, NEET, and CLAT.

A total of 26,649 degrees were awarded, comprising 22,932 undergraduate, 3,582 postgraduate, 11 MPhil, and 124 PhD degrees. Women accounted for 70% of PhD recipients, highlighting increased female participation in advanced studies.

 Additionally, 76 gold medals and six memorial awards were presented to meritorious students, recognizing outstanding academic and research achievements.

The convocation concluded with both LG Sandhu and CM Gupta encouraging graduates to apply their knowledge for societal benefit, innovation, and nation-building, underscoring the importance of youth as catalysts for a developed India.
