Amritsar: The Punjab Police has detained six individuals in connection with a grenade explosion at a police station in Amritsar, with investigators indicating the involvement of a foreign-backed terror network.
The blast took place late at night between March 29 and 30 at the Bhindi Saida police station. Although no casualties were reported, the incident triggered a large-scale investigation involving multiple police units.
According to Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, early findings suggest that the suspects were part of a group allegedly operating under the influence of handlers based in Pakistan. The network is believed to have received instructions from across the border, with the objective of targeting law enforcement infrastructure.
Police officials said the accused were motivated through financial incentives and had undergone a process of radicalisation before executing the attack. On the night of the incident, they reportedly conducted a recce of the police station and later used explosive devices to carry out the strike.
During the operation to apprehend the suspects, authorities also recovered firearms, adding to the evidence against them.
The case is part of a broader pattern of low-intensity attacks aimed at creating fear and instability in the border state. In recent years, similar incidents have been reported, including attacks on police establishments and government facilities, often linked to cross-border elements.
Officials noted that such operations typically involve foreign handlers recruiting and directing local operatives to carry out targeted strikes.
A case has been registered under multiple legal provisions, including laws related to unlawful activities, explosives, and illegal arms possession. Investigators are now working to trace the wider network, identify additional links, and prevent further incidents.
The probe remains ongoing as security agencies intensify efforts to dismantle the entire module behind the attack.
