New Delhi: A tragic incident unfolded in Mehrauli where a two-and-a-half-year-old child lost his life after drowning in a swimming pool at an under-construction farmhouse, police said.
According to officials, the incident took place on Wednesday evening when the toddler, who lived nearby with his family, was playing at the site. The family members, employed as workers at the farmhouse, later discovered the child in the pool after he went missing for some time.
Police believe the child may have either slipped into the water or accidentally entered the pool while playing. The matter is currently under investigation.
Authorities said the incident occurred around 6 pm but was reported to the police later in the night. By the time the child was taken to a nearby hospital, he was declared dead.
Officials highlighted that the pool was left uncovered and lacked basic safety arrangements, raising serious concerns about negligence at the construction site. The structure, reportedly a few feet deep, had been filled with water without protective barriers.
A case has been registered against both the property owner and the contractor. The contractor has been taken into custody from the Devli area, while the role of the owner is also being examined.
Relatives said the child had stepped out to play shortly after having food and did not return as expected. A search was launched, and his clothes were later found near the pool, leading the family to the spot where he was discovered.
The family, originally from Bihar, had moved to Delhi last year and had been working at the site for the past few months.
Police have booked those responsible under charges related to negligence leading to death, as well as unsafe construction practices. Further investigation is ongoing.
