New York : United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, India, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives and extending heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. Speaking to journalists at the UN Headquarters in New York, Mr. Guterres reiterated that attacks targeting civilians are completely unacceptable and that those responsible must be held accountable through credible and lawful means.
The Secretary-General’s remarks came just ahead of a closed-door session of the UN Security Council, convened to discuss rising tensions between India and Pakistan. The meeting was requested amid growing international concern over the deteriorating security environment in the region.
In his statement, Mr. Guterres noted that the relationship between the two South Asian neighbours is currently “at its highest tension in years,” underscoring the urgent need for diplomacy and constructive dialogue. “The cycle of violence must be broken,” he stated, adding that the international community must encourage all sides to resolve their differences peacefully and in accordance with international law.
Mr. Guterres also emphasized the readiness of the United Nations to support any initiative that promotes de-escalation, fosters trust, and renews commitment to peace and stability in the region. “We are prepared to assist in any effort that contributes to reducing tensions and enhancing dialogue,” he said, highlighting the UN’s longstanding position of encouraging bilateral solutions, while also supporting multilateral peace efforts when needed.
The Pahalgam attack, which claimed multiple lives and injured several others, has been widely condemned across the globe. The incident has intensified calls for stricter counter-terrorism measures and greater international cooperation to combat extremism in the region.
India has blamed cross-border terrorism for the attack, pointing to continuing challenges posed by militant groups operating from across the Line of Control. Pakistan, meanwhile, has denied any involvement and called for an impartial investigation.
