Putin-Trump Dialogue Sparks Optimism for Future: Australian Campaigner Helen

UN, Mar 20 ,2025 : Australian peace activist and Global Peace Movement member Helen Caldicott has voiced optimism that the recent phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump could pave the way for lasting global peace.

“It is quite rare for a US President to engage directly with Putin, and I hope these discussions will lead to permanent peace. This gives me hope for the future, as both nations are armed with nuclear weapons on high alert. If used, they could devastate most life on Earth,” Caldicott stated in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Expressing her satisfaction, she welcomed Trump’s initiative to reach out to Putin in an effort to resolve the Ukraine conflict. However, she acknowledged that future discussions would face challenges, particularly regarding NATO relations.

“While non-proliferation is crucial, it is equally important for both superpowers to set a precedent by working toward eliminating nuclear weapons. This could encourage other nuclear-armed nations to follow suit,” she emphasized.

During their Tuesday phone call, Putin and Trump deliberated on strategies to resolve the Ukraine crisis, expressing a mutual commitment to stabilizing relations given their global security responsibilities, according to the Kremlin.

The Kremlin further revealed that Putin accepted Trump’s proposal for all parties involved in the conflict to halt attacks on energy infrastructure for 30 days, marking a potential step toward de-escalation.
