Bhubaneswar : The recent tragic death of a Nepalese student at a private university in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, has ignited significant concern and diplomatic engagement between Nepal and India. The Odisha Police have registered a case regarding the reported suicide and have arrested a fellow student from the same university in connection with the incident.
Nepal’s Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, has expressed deep concern over the matter. In a social media post, he stated that his government is actively engaging through diplomatic channels to address the situation. The Nepalese Embassy in New Delhi has dispatched two officers to Odisha to counsel and support Nepalese students affected by the incident.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, has led to heightened tensions on the university campus. Students and various student organizations have been vocal in demanding justice for the deceased, organizing protests and vigils to honor her memory and call for accountability.
In response to the escalating situation, the university administration issued a notice directing all international students from Nepal to vacate the campus immediately. This sudden directive has left many Nepalese students feeling distressed and uncertain about their immediate future. The Nepalese Embassy is coordinating with the Indian government and the Odisha Chief Minister’s office to ensure the safety and well-being of these students. Efforts are underway to provide them with options, including the choice to remain in their hostels or return home, based on their preferences.
This tragic event has brought to light broader issues concerning the mental health and well-being of international students, as well as the responsibilities of educational institutions in providing a safe and supportive environment. The diplomatic engagement between Nepal and India underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing such sensitive situations and ensuring the welfare of students studying abroad.
As investigations continue, there is a collective call for a thorough and transparent inquiry to uncover the circumstances leading to the student’s death.
