New Delhi : A fresh controversy has erupted around the Bollywood film Jaat after a First Information Report (FIR) was filed in Punjab’s Jalandhar district against actors Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, Vineet Kumar Singh, and others, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. The film, which released on April 10, has drawn criticism from Christian groups who claim that one of its scenes shows disrespect toward Jesus Christ and the Christian faith.
The FIR was lodged on Wednesday under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings. Besides the actors, the case also names the film’s director Gopichand Malineni and the producers.
According to the complaint, a particular scene in the movie depicts Randeep Hooda’s character standing beneath a crucifix inside a church, directly above the holy pulpit, while devotees are seen praying. The scene allegedly includes acts of intimidation and what has been described as unruly behaviour inside the religious place.
The complainant claimed that the depiction was not only offensive but also deliberately inserted in a manner that deeply hurt the sentiments of the Christian community. “This is not just a creative liberty; it is a targeted insult meant to provoke and misrepresent a peaceful religion,” the complaint reads.
Jalandhar police officials confirmed the registration of the case and said that a formal investigation has been initiated. “We are examining the footage of the film and other related material to assess the allegations,” a senior police officer said.
The makers of Jaat have not issued an official statement so far. However, social media has seen a flurry of reactions, with some calling for a ban on the film and others urging restraint and a legal course of action.
Jaat, touted as an intense action-drama, brings together a heavyweight cast and has drawn attention for its gritty portrayal of social and political tensions. The controversy over the church scene, however, has overshadowed the film’s initial box office success.
