President of India Honours MSME Day, Applauds Spirit of Innovation and Entrepreneurship

President Murmu highlights MSMEs as the backbone of India’s economy, urges innovation, women entrepreneurship, and green technology for sustainable growth.

NEW DELHI, 27 JUNE: The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, graced and addressed the MSME Day celebrations in New Delhi on June 27, 2025. Speaking at the event, she highlighted the critical role Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play in shaping India’s economic and social landscape.

Describing MSMEs as the backbone of the nation’s economy, President Murmu emphasized their significant contribution to GDP and grassroots-level innovation. She noted that these enterprises not only create employment opportunities with low capital investment but also play a vital role in rural and backward area development, thus promoting inclusive growth and decentralised progress.

However, she acknowledged the many challenges faced by the MSME sector—such as financial constraints, stiff competition from large corporations, lack of modern technology, raw materials, skilled manpower, limited market access, and delayed payments.

To address these issues, the President praised the Government of India’s policy measures, including the revision of MSME classification criteria, enhanced credit support, and procurement mandates requiring central ministries and PSUs to source at least 35% of their requirements from MSMEs. She also lauded initiatives like the PM Vishwakarma Yojana for artisan skill development and the launch of the Online Dispute Resolution Portal aimed at resolving payment delays.

Highlighting the importance of innovation, the President said grassroots solutions driven by MSMEs can offer affordable and locally relevant outcomes. She stressed that innovation is key to ensuring the sector’s long-term sustainability and competitiveness.

President Murmu also expressed satisfaction over the growing participation of women in the MSME sector. Encouraging further progress, she urged young women to establish their own enterprises and become self-reliant contributors to the economy.

Addressing environmental concerns, she pointed out that while MSMEs drive economic growth, they also account for a considerable share of energy use and emissions. She called for the urgent promotion of green technologies in the sector to enhance sustainability and help the country meet its climate goals.

In her closing remarks, the President reaffirmed the vital role of MSMEs in building a self-reliant, innovative, and sustainable India.
